Looking for an interpreter in Corsica ?
As an experienced conference interpreter, I have the right solution for you. Here are the various interpreting techniques at your disposal: booth, portable equipment, whispering, consecutive, and liaison. They are explained hereafter.
Interpreting Techniques:
Most of the time, interpreters work in pairs and most frequently provide simultaneous interpreting (sometimes called simultaneous translation) from a booth. In the booth, the interpreters alternate every 30 minutes, interpreting the speech they hear in their headsets.
When the meeting only involves a small number of people (up to 20), the interpreters can work with portable equipment that is also suitable for site visits.
Sometimes, an interpreter may work alone using a technique called “consecutive interpreting”. The speaker talks for some 5 to 10 minutes and the interpreter who has meanwhile taken notes, then speaks in the language of the audience. This type of interpreting works for relatively short speeches. It can indeed become boring for the audience who has to wait before understanding what the speaker had to say; but it is sometimes the only way to go if there is no equipment.
If only one or two people need interpreting, the interpreter can whisper. He or she is just behind the listener(s) and whispers in their language.
Interpreting booths are ideal for interpreters as the sound conditions are optimal. In the other scenarios, the interpreters are in the same conditions as the audience with possibly telephones ringing, people coughing, etc. Concentration and hence quality could then be adversely affected.
Liaison interpreting often takes place during visits or informal meetings. As with consecutive interpreting, there is no equipment needed. In this case, the speaker says a few words that the interpreter then translates, without having to take notes.
